Thapae Gate is classified in the following categorie(s): Sightseeing
Thapae Gate is the main entrance to Chiang Mai's center (the old walled city). It was before used by the traders, diplomats and visiting monks who passed it to enter the city. In the old times, Chiang Mai's main road was from the Mae Ping river down to Thapae Gate (through Thapae road). Nowadays, Chiang Mai is different and has grown a lot, but Thapae road is still the main thoroughfare of the city. Thapae Gate is also the main place of the city that holds public events and festivals.

Many events are held at Thapae Gate, parades and processions such as the Flower Festival in February, the Buddhist Makha Bucha Day, the famous Songkran festival and of course the New Year Countdown. All these events are centered around Thapae Gate and Thapae road. The Loy Krathong festival, though more centered around the Mae Ping river, is also partly held on Tha Ppae Gate.

The square courtyard located around the gate was in the old days the place for people to meet - for trade, relaxation or official business. Today, people still meet at the same place, but is more for relaxation and entertainment.

Also worth to mention, the famous Sunday Night Market Walking Street. The market starts at Thapae Gates and continues through Ratchadamnoen road to the temple Wat Phra Singh.
